Simple Rules For Eyeglass Wearers

When you buy prescription eyeglasses there are some things to keep in mind. The most important thing is to think of your glasses as an investment, and don’t buy cheap eyewear. Invest in high quality lenses and frames. Buying high quality does not always have to mean buying expensive; there are many discount eyewear stores which offer quality frames and lenses at reasonable prices. One of the best ways to save on glasses is to buy online.

Protection from the sun is important for your glasses and for your eyes

Do not leave prescription glasses in the sun. Many of the lenses are not made from glass but instead are made from plastic. Over time the heat from being left in the sun can warp the lenses, making them difficult to see through. Frames made of plastic can also warp and become uncomfortable to wear. Make sure to check that your prescription sunglasses have protection against dangerous UV rays. Tinted glasses alone don’t really protect you from UV rays. Although some plastic lenses made of certain materials such as polycarbonate, inherently block most UV rays. It is still best to have a protective treatment applied to prescription sunglasses.

A few other simple things you can do to make your glasses last for the length of your prescription are:

  • Get and keep your glasses in a case
  • Take your glasses on and off with two hands. (Using one hand can easily damage the frame.)
  • From time to time check your eyeglass frames for misalignment, if your glasses need adjusting stop in an optician’s office. Most will adjust your glasses free of charge even if you did not buy your glasses from them.

Take care when cleaning your glasses

When washing your glasses be sure to use a non-abrasive soap or cleaning cloth. Anything else will scratch your lenses and can wear off any protective lens coatings over time. Also use cold or room temperature water to wash your glasses. Hot water can also remove lens coatings. Don’t but new glasses if you have not had a recent eye exam. Many people buy glasses online but forget to update their prescription before ordering. Over time prescriptions can change and any older prescriptions become obsolete after about two years.

Using these simple guidelines will help ensure your glasses last for the lifetime of the prescription, as intended.
