It seems that celebrities are always trendsetters. If they begin to wear something soon after you will see the look duplicated by people everywhere. The reason their “look” becomes popular is probably because they are so visible. One of the latest celebrity trends is to wear retro glasses. Some of the celebrities don’t even have prescription lenses; they just have glass lenses in the frame.
Both Johnny Depp and Justin Timberlake have been photographed wearing retro wayfarers, a style of frames that have a nerdy look and helped coin the term “geek chic”. Right now retro glasses are very popular. It is pretty common to use glasses as a way to project a self image, just by wearing a pair of glasses you can project a whole attitude about who you are.
Sunglasses are not just for blocking the sun
One fashion accessory just about every celebrity gets photographed wearing at one time or another is a pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses give you protection from the sun rays but more than likely celebrities wear them for other reasons. Sunglasses can give you a sense of privacy, when you are in public. They are also great at conveying a certain image. Right now retro sunglasses are very popular, glasses from the 50’s 60’s, 70’s and 80’s are making a comeback. R&B singer, Rihanna is often photographed in vintage cat eye styled sunglasses or wayfarer 2 ray bans a 50’s style of glasses.

Sometimes celebrities can make a style of glasses popular just by wearing them in a movie. One of the most famous examples of that was when the movie Top Gun was popular in the mid 80’s; Tom Cruise wore a pair of aviator glasses for the role. After the movie aviator glasses became a popular trend. The glasses style have been around since the 1940’s, when General MacArthur was photographed wearing them, while surely the General might have had some influence in selling pilots on wearing the style, it was Tom Cruise that made them popular with everyday people. Tom seemed to have the magic touch because the same thing happened when he wore ray bans for the movie Risky Business. Celebrities have a lot of influence over popular culture trends in just about every way from the cars they drive to the eyewear styles they wear and they have a lot to do with the current retro trend in eyeglasses.
